Competitions FINAL DEMONSTRATION CONCERT

Colour and variety were displayed in the final demonstration concert which ended the Christchurch Competitions Society’s fortyninth annual festival in the Civic Theatre on Saturday evening. The big audience was entertained by prize-winners in the vocal, speech, instrumental and dancing sections. The highlight of the evening was the spirited tap dancing of Mary Wise. Her tapping had everyone’s feet itching to join her.

Paris of the 1890’s was brought to life by the Santa Rosa Ladies’ Club. Can-can dancers gave a bright performance. Alastair Bell gave an impressive performance of "Thus Saith the Lord,” from Handel’s “Messiah." The piano passages were clear and well expressed, and strength and vigour marked the forte passages. “Preparations are already well advanced for the society’s golden jubilee next year. The 1962 competitions are expected to be the brightest and best ever,” said Mr H. Chaplin, president of the society. “We have received an anonymous donation of £5O to be given as first prize in the Flint Cup for tap dancing. This year’s prize money was 255, so we are expecting an enormous increase in entries for this section.” Results are:— BEGG’S CONCERT HALL Vocal Lieder. Women: Gwenyth Millar 1.
