“Mission With Deep Purpose”

The United States VicePresident (Mr Johnson) told a press conference in Manila today that the preservation of freedom in Asia was the "most important purpose that exists” He said: “I have come to South-east Asia on a mission with deep purpose, the most important that exists—to preserve freedom in Asia and peace in the world" He said that during ms one-day visit to Manila he had conferred with President Carlos Garcia "not only on what our future course should be, but what our present position is.” Mr Johnson was asked to reconcile his assurances that the United States would resist the Communist advance in Asia with "retreat in Laos." He replied that a mistake should never be made of underestimating President Kennedy's desire and determination to carry out policies he had enunciated. I
