New Use Suggested For Peanut Butter Jars
(New Zealand Press Association)
TIMARU, May 12.
Mr W. G. Sutton, a South Canterbury farmer, was critical of the tariff charges and customs duty system when he related this story to the executive of South Canterbury Federated Farmers today. "I wanted a petrol sediment bowl for one of my machines recently, and when in town purchased one from a local dealer. As I was going out. I noticed the price on the packet. It was 8s Bd. although the bowl looked to me to be little more than an ordinary household preserving jar without a lid. I was informed the price was right for the bowl was subject to a tariff charge. “I then went to the crockery department of the firm, and asked the girl if she had-*
a jar like the one I had just bought. . She said there were none in stock at the moment, but if there had been the price would be about Is. “From there I went to the grocery department where, to my amazement, I saw on the shelf, peanut butter in jars which looked exactly the same as the one I had bought for 8s Bd. I asked the girl if I could have a closer look, and sure enough the lid of the peanut butter jar fitted my sediment bowl “So, for IDs 9d I got 2Jlb of peanut butter and a jar to suit my needs—a bit different from 8s 8d for the sediment bowl. “Now I know how to get a cheap bowl, but I still have the problem of eating all the peanut butter every .time I want one.’’
