22 CONVICTIONS FOR CARNAL KNOWLEDGE

NEW PLYMOUTH, May 12. A party to celebrate the New Year was held at “the woodpile” at King Edward Park, Stratford, on the night of December 31, and at the party a 14-year-old girl had intercourse with a number of youths and young men. she told Mr E. F. Rothwell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Stratford. Twenty-three youths and young men were charged with attempted unlawful carnal knowledge or unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl. and another was charged in respect of another 14-year-old girl. The charges extended from September 18 to January 21. Only six of the 24 pleaded guilty, the remainder denying the charges. The girl who is now aged 14 years 7 months, was appearing as a police witness in conjunction with the other girl. Questioned as to the number of men she had been intimate with, she said she could not remember. Detective - Sergeant G. Hogan, of Hawera, prosecuted. The 24 were represented by Mr J. W. Till (10),

Mr T. F. Andrews (five), and Mr A. V. C. Buchanan (one). The others were not represented by counsel. Convicting all the accused today, the Magistrate imposed fines as follows on those charged with unlawful carnal knowledge:— £2o.—Rex Lance John Neustroski, aged 26, railways employee, New Plymouth; Robert Hilton Potts. 27, railways employee, Stratford; Murray Collins, married, railways employee, Stratford; Donald Russell Shaw, 24, farm worker Stratford; Clive William Neustroski, 25, railways employee, New Plymouth.

Stratford; Peter William Hudson, 17, workman, Waltara; John McClure, 17. workman, Stratford; David Martin West, 17, farm worker, Stratford. Charged with attempted unlawful carnal knowledge were John Griffin Wellington, 18, farm worker, Tuna, who was convicted and fined £7 10s, and Peter William Gooch, 19, workman. Stratford, convicted and fined £lO.
