ORCHESTRAL COURSE
Holiday Study For Pupils
A holiday orchestral course for post-primary pupils will be held in Christchurch from next Monday to Saturday. About 70 boys and girls will attend. • The school is for those who have reached at least grade five in music examinations. During the Christmas holidays a similar course was held in Auckland. Mr R. E. Perks, lecturer in music at the Christchurch Teachers' college, said yesterday that the Christchurch course was to help South Island children particularly. About 24 of the pupils who will attend the course are from Christchurch. Some come from Auckland. About 30 of the visitors will be billeted in the city. Those attending the course will form a complete orchestra and will practise together and in sections. The course will be held at the Christchurch Teachers' College. Mr W. H. WaldenMills, the adviser on school music to the Department of Education, is in charge and Mr Perks will assist. Some applicants for the course had to be refused because they had riot reached the standard required or because their acceptance would have meant a wrong balance of instruments in the orchestra, Mr Perks said. He said the orchestra would help those who were not up to the standard of the National Youth Orchestra.
