QUALITY OF N.Z. CLOTHES
Manufacturer’s View
‘•The quality of clothing produced in New Zealand compares favourably with that of any other part of the world, and we are capable of producing all New Zealand’s requirments. said Mr C. H. Stockbridge, chairman of the Canterbury clothing trade group of the New Zealand Manufacturer’s Association, addressing 28 careers advisers who are attending a course on industry. “We do not think that there should be no imports of clothes, but such imports should be token only.” he said. "The token imports give us a lead on the design, quality, and price of overseas goods. “The pay and conditions in the industry are second to none and the opportunities available are very varied,” said Mr Stockwell. ’’The clothing industry is one of our largest secondary trades employing 24.000 persons in 1200 factories.” The industry was seriously understaffed at present, and most employees were receiving more than the basic award wages. Some employers even paid some girls, who were living away from home, more to help them with their board expenses, he said.
