Created By Louie Philippe

A very unmilitary French king, Louis Philippe, created the Legion more than 125 years ago. Then, as today, its mission was to help to pacify Algeria. As it heads for oblivion it can count one brigade, nine regiments and four companies of desert troops—about 20,000 men. After World War 11. the Legion attracted thousands of disillusioned German soldiers, some of them former Nazis. Volunteers sign for five years at a few pounds a month and are trained in a harsh, spartan life. Hundreds desert during the first few -months and some get clear. Those caught may do six months on little more than bread and water. The legion has had princes and paupers in its ranks. One recruit in the long ago is said to have been a bishop.—Associated Newspapers’ Feature Services. Survey Work.— The oceanographic ship, Viti, in Welton for revictually, would sail tomorrow night for survey work off Cape Palliser, said Captain F. W. Burgon yesterday.—(PA)
