NEW AOTEA
It is possible that consideration will be given to the release of mildew resistant Aotea in about two or three years' time. This was stated this week by Mr L. G. Copp, senior cereal breeder at the Crop Research Division, when he was asked about progress being made with breeding mildew resistance into Aotea. A growth chamber at the division is now full of mil-dew-resistant Aotea. It should be harvested in time for sowing out this autumn or early winter. About 3 or 41b of seed is expected from the chamber harvest and this is likely to give quite a fewbushels of seed when it is sown out in the field at wide spacings. It will subsequently have to go into yield trials. A Californian red grain wheat, CI 12633, has been used to impart mildew resistance to Aotea, This same wheat has been used to produce a rust-resistant Gabo, but selection for rust resistance has not been carried out with Aotea. The new Aotea will also be a red grain wheat. Red grain wheats also enjoy the virtue of being more resistant to sprouting.
