PEOPLE IN THE PLAY

One of the best prospects in Canterbury table tennis this season could be M. Coppen, one of last year’s junior representative players. Still eligible

for junior play. Coppen has a very long reach which aids him in powerful hitting and steady retrieving. He could be the province's top junior this year. ★ An incident in a senior competition game at Whangarei last Saturday has resulted in one week’s suspension for L. J. Dean, the North Auckland forward. After the incident Dean was ordered off the field. After considering the evidence, the Whangarei sub-union imposed one week’s penalty. ★ The New Zealand 440 yards champion, J. W. Taylor, recently left for a six months’ holiday in the United Kingdom and Europe. While overseas, Taylor intends to compete in track meetings and will return to New Zealand later in the year to attempt to qualify for the Empire Games team.

Additional interest will be taken in the charity match between the Barbarians club and Auckland on May 21. with the availability of the Northland and All Black forward. Peter Jones. "This is great news," said the president of the club (Mr A. J. Mcßeath) after he learned that Jones would be available. Two other players from North Auckland. L. J. Dean, and a promising forward, D. Hewitt, have also accepted invitations to play tor the Barbarians.

With the forthcoming visit of Australia later this year in view, a selection committee of three has been appointed by the New Zealand Golf Association. The nominations of Messrs K. S. Glendinning, V. C. Hollis, and J. A. Scouler were the only ones received and they were duly appointed to the committee. The former Kiwi representative. Pat Creedy, showed that he had lost little of his ability when he scored 14 of the 20 points for the Marist senior reserve League team last Saturday. Creedy, who is coaching the team, only decided to

play because the team’s usual members had to play for the senior team which was short through injuries. His deceptive running and powerful kicking were features of the game and the future success of the side may depend to a large degree on his availability.

The captain of the Fulham and England soccer teams, Johnny Haynes, has received an offer of £lOO,OOO to join the International Milan Club in I Italy. Haynes, an inside j forward, has rejected the offer in the meantime. Haynes himself would receive £lO,OOO if the transfer were effected, and would earn £BOOO a year with the Italian side.
