TROTTING GUINESS PICKED TO WIN

Ayson Handicap Today At Oamaru

Guiness, a decisive winner over 13 furlongs on the first night of the recent Forbury Park meeting, should repeat that effort at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting today. The Stormyway four-year-old is a candidate for the C. L. Ayson Handicap, which will be run over 10 furlongs.

Guiness was having his fourth start since being trained by F. E. Newfield when he won. He has shown marked improvement since being trained at Templeton and now that he has struck form, he should carry on.

Whipdale gained a welldeserved win’ when he held off the speedy Sierra Madre by a head at Amberley last Saturday. Whipdale was an unlucky second at Forbury Park a week earlier. A member of R. H. Negus’s team, he is a capable sprinter and from No. 2 at the barrier should be close to the lead throughout. Worthy River, which is trained on the Oamaru course by S. W. Easton, was a last-s<art winner at Forbury Park. There was merit In his effort as he lost ground in the middle stages and had to wait to obtain an opening along the rails. He should be prominent today. Sand Drift has paced some of his best races at Oamaru. He was fifth over 13 furlongs at Gore last month after starting from 36 yards. He is more favourably placed on the front in this field and should be capable of a bold showing. Whipaway, Count Cavan, Gold Maru, Nevan, Red Belle and Lileas have all raced well enough in their last few starts to be respected in this field. Robert Medoro, a candidate also for the Innovation Handicap earlier in the day, should go close to winning the Waikaura Handicap, the main race on the programme for trotters. Robert Medoro

was most Impressive when he won over 13 furlongs In the smart time of 3min 41 3-ssec last month. If he trots as well in this field, he should be a decisive winner. Placed At Methven Mayfair Star has not raced since she was beaten narrowly by John Black over two miles in good time at Methven last month. That was Mayfair Star’s best effort for some time and one which was good enough to give her a winning chance in this field. Tracey's Pal is one of the best three-year-old trotters seen this season. He has not raced since he finished second to Our Own in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes at Addington in February. He is a'so in the Innovation Handicap and his effort in the earlier event should be a satisfactory guide to his prospects in this race. Bandsaw made up ground for second to the promising Flying Paddy at Forbury Park last Saturday. If he trots as bodiy again, he should be hard to keep out of the money. La Gloria gave hints of early winning form when she finished fourth over two miles at the Cheviot meeting in March. This is her first start since then and she could easily upset calculations.

Catapult and Trotaway have trotted useful . races lately and look to be the pick of the remainder. The double will be run on the R. A. McDowell Memorial and the Papakaio Handicaps. both of which will be run over two miles. Robin Dundee. Peat Moss and Yare are selected to dispute the finish to the first leg, while Worthy Dieman and Pacework appeal most in the second. Light, misty rain fell in Oamaru yesterday. The track will be soft.
