MATERNITY HOSPITAL

Possibility Of Closing <N Z. Press Association) WHAKATANE, May 12. The Murupara Maternity Hospital will be closed at the end of this month because of a lack of trained staff, unless the Health Department takes action. The Bay of Plenty Hospital Board in Whakatane said this in a telegram to Mr P. B Allen, M.P. “We have no option' unless a miracle happens.” said the board chairman (Mr J. Mullins). It was ironical, said Mr M. L. Mercer, that the temporary hospital would have to be closed just when plans were being made final for a permanent hospital at Murupara. The nearest maternity hospital to Murupara would be at Whakatane, 55 miles to the north.
