RAILWAYS SHIFTS

Investigation Appointment

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, May 12. Mr C. A. McFarlane, former Director-General of the Post Office, has accepted the invitation of the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) to examine and report upon the conditions and remuneration of night shift employees, in the railways. Announcing this today. Mr McAlpine said he was grateful to Mr McFarlane who. because of his long experience in the service of the State, was eminently suitable to conduct this independent inquiry.

Mr McFarlane expected to be able to report in six week’s time. The order of reference calls for an inquiry and report on the following matters:

(1) The incidence and conditions for rostered night shift work in the Railways Department—i.e., the extent, nature and differences as compared with industrial shift workers and shift workers in other departments.

(2) Whether, having regard to the methods used in remunerating shift workers in industry and in other Government departments, the rostered night shift workers in the Railways Department are adequately remunerated for this work, and if not, what changes are recommended.
