A Giant Apple
An interesting exhibit at last week’s Canterbury Horticultural Society’s show was the heaviest apple. The winner, Mr L. E. Holden, entered five fruits of ‘‘Fair Belle’’— and their combined weight was 51b 15oz! You wouldn’t need many of these to provide baked apple for the family!
“Fair Belle” is a quite a consistently used apple in these classes, and can be relied on for weight and good shape. The eye is rather deep, but it is not difficult or wasteful to peel, and the colour is nice and bright, with ample red flecking. “Fair Belle” is. a local variety, being raised by a Mr Jenkins from the Sheffield district, in the 1920’5. If readers have more detailed information I would be very pleased to include it on this page.
