ELLERTON LODGE

Good, Keen Jumper

Ellenton Lodge was taken Into the middle at Riccarton yesterday to jump the pony hurdles, and then one fence on the trial steeplechase course.

Everything went as planned over the pony hurdles, which he jumped cleverly. But he was not content with jumping one fence. He jumped six fences, and jumped them very well, too.

Ellerton Lxxige is a hard puller, as J. L. Coulter found when attempting to ease him after popping over the second of the brush double. Coulter was in difficulties for a moment, so gave the big Glenfalloch gelding rein to jump the boards, then the sod wall, and then three brush fences, finishing with the double. If Ellerton Lodge had had his way he would have gone around again, but he was restrained by Coulter and waved off by his trainer, G. R. Pelling. Ellerton Lodge is a seven-year-old, and will do his racing for Mr W. Grant, of Fairlie.

Mr Grant bought him in the North Island last.year soon after he lost his successful jumner Pitlochry, which had to be destroyed after a schooling fall. Ellerton Lodge was once trained by E. Ropiha, and later by B. A. V. Preston, and he has been well schooled. There would be few if any safer jumpers at Riccarton. His dam, Greek Gold, was sired by The Greek. She be-, longs to the Desert Gold family.
