TROTTING ROBIN DUNDEE HAS GOOD CHANCE

First Open Handicap

At Oamaru

The New Zealand Oaks winner, Robin Dundee, is selected to win her first open handicap in the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap tomorrow. This race is the first leg of the double at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting. Robin Dundee gave Lynrobin a start of 48 yards and ran her to a length at Gore on April 22 at her most recent start. Robin Dundee unwound a brilliant run from an awkward position and her placing was full of merit.

Tomorrow’s race will be Robin Dundee’s first test over two miles. There is no reason to doubt her ability to master the distance as she has run out 13 furlongs solidly in strong classic company.

Peat Moss was second twice at Forbury Park last Saturday. At his first appearance he was beaten by a nose by Lauder Scott at the end of two miles. He began cleanly in both starts at Forbury Park and will only have to race as generously to be hard to beat in this field. Like Robin Dundee, he should not be troubled by any easing in the track conditions.

The consistent Yare could be a threat in this field. He was- a little disappointing when fifth over two miles on the first night at Forbury Park, but is expected to be harder to beat on the grass ’track at Oamaru. | Spangled Princess appeals [most of the other horses on the front mark. She has shown great promise in her racing this season and at her last start she was a fair fifth over two miles at Gore in April. Apparently she requires firm footing to show her best form and conditions should suit her at Oamaru.

Dark Louise has had no luck in her recent racing, but she is much better than those efforts suggest. She is usually most reliable and if she can be restrained in a handy position until the final furlong, she should be capable of outsprinting most of her rivals.

Out Of Form

No Charge, Resolution and Thunderbolt have little in the way of worth-while form to recommend them, but at their best they would be capable of racing prominently. Gay Diamond, Lauder Scott and Leslie Grattan have shown sound form lately, but they look to be too far back to be a serious threat.

Sierra Madre has finished second in her only starts—her first for more than five years—this season and she will dominate betting on the second leg, the Papakaio Handicap, to be run over two .miles. Sierra Madre was runner-up to Sarona at Methven in April and last Saturday she looked unlucky to be beaten narrowly by Whipdale at Amberley.

Sierra Madre is not a reliable barrier proposition, but provided she does not lose too much ground at the start, should be too good for most in this field. Worthy Dieman, which is regarded as a potential stayer, was impressive when he won at Amberley last Saturday. If the pace is solid all the way, he should again be hard to beat.

Pacework attempted to lead for the last six of 13 furlongs at Amberley, but she was narrowly beaten into fourth place. She is a member of a fine staying family and should be capable of a bold showing. Meadow Haze, Phildora. Robyn, Southern Cross and Implore are others expected to add interest to the finish. There has been light rain

in the Oamaru district during the last week, but it is not expected to have had any serious effect on the track, which should be in good order.
