RACING Musick For Otaki First Leg
”1 ne Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, May 11. The Woodville trainer, P. Burgess, with Musick and Melody Man engaged, has a strong hand in the Ta Timi Kara Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham on Saturday.
Of the two Musick has the better recent form. by Melody Man, making his reappearance after a spell, showed he was not far from his best when he finished close to the placed horses at Woodville last week. Interest is added to the event by the inclusion of the two southerners Compensate and Gay Tommy. Arid, if started, will have a big following and others with the ability to take part in the finish include Ruve, Ballast. Ivories. Wonderway and Anchor.
At his last start Musick came with a powerful late run wide out in the Te Mahanga Handicap on the second day of the Hawke's Bay meeting and failed by only a long neck to gather in the winner Earl Robin. It was his best form for some time, but it was also the first time in recent months that he had experienced conditions to bis liking—easy and cutting
The going at Trentham on Saturday is expected to be easy at the least, so he should have ground to suit him. If the rain, which is forecast develops. Melody Man will come strongly into favour. There have been few better gallopers in the heaviest of conditions in recent years than Melody Man and he has recorded some of his best performances at the Wellington winter meeting. Corapensaie's Chance At his last start the Oraritrained Compensate won the Nelson Cup for the fourth consecutive year, making a big impression by the ease with which he defeated a useful field. Compensate has done well on previous visits to Trentham and his latest success left no doubt that he retains all his ability. With 9-0 he does not appear harshly treated. Gay Tommy, from Riccarton. -was disappointing at his last start at Riccarton, where he faded to seventh after being near the lead to the straight. In his preceding outing he was an unlucky second to Juventas in the Sockburn Handicap at Riccar-
ton, spoiling his chance by lugging. Five days earlier he went down narrowly to the highly-rate Navarro in the Great Autumn Handicap. Good Impression
On those performances Gay Tommy will have to be respected this week. Without being asked for fast time he made a good impression in training at Riccarton on Tuesday.
Ruve is handily placed in the •weights, but she has shown her best on firm going. Balfast finished strongly for fifth in the May Handicap at Woodville and will be suited by the long run in. Lorica won over a mile and a quarter at Awaouni last month, but he may be found wanting over the final furlong on this track.
Wonderway. which has done well over shorter distances at Trentham previously might be capable of an upset. The second leg of the double will be the Taiuua Handicap. The track will be soft.
