City Council Vacancy

■ Sir,—Now that the Citizens’ Association has wisely decided not to contest the City Council by-election, I wonder what would happen if a nomination was received from an independent candidate? On principle, the Labour Party then would be forced to withdraw its candidate and allow the vacancy to be filled by the independent—to save the expense of an election. Let us hope an independent will stand, willing and able to give full time as other councillors.—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. May 11, 1961.
