SCHOOLBOYS' TOURNEY
South Canterbury Wins Handsomely
(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, May 11. History was made today when the first schoolboys' representative golf match was played between South Canterbury and Canterbury, the home team winning handsomely by 11 matches to 3. two foursomes and two singles being halved. It was a fine effort, as. with the exception of two players, it was the strongest possible ride Canterbury could field. Both singles and foursomes were played over 12 holes on the Highfield Golf Club’s course, which was extremely heavy after recent rains. In spite of cold, showery weather the boys produced a solid brand of golf. The Canterbury boys averaged 14 years of age. a year younger than their opponents. Over all. though, their handicaps were considerably lower. For example, four Canterbury boys (D. R Hope. R. S. Peate, I. J. McNish. and R. D. Duke) are regular players in open in-ter-city competitions in Christchurch. They all play off a 10 handicap.
