South Canterbury Wins Handsomely

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, May 11. History was made today when the first schoolboys' representative golf match was played between South Canterbury and Canterbury, the home team winning handsomely by 11 matches to 3. two foursomes and two singles being halved. It was a fine effort, as. with the exception of two players, it was the strongest possible ride Canterbury could field. Both singles and foursomes were played over 12 holes on the Highfield Golf Club’s course, which was extremely heavy after recent rains. In spite of cold, showery weather the boys produced a solid brand of golf. The Canterbury boys averaged 14 years of age. a year younger than their opponents. Over all. though, their handicaps were considerably lower. For example, four Canterbury boys (D. R Hope. R. S. Peate, I. J. McNish. and R. D. Duke) are regular players in open in-ter-city competitions in Christchurch. They all play off a 10 handicap. South Canterbury's top trio are on 12, The teams were sponsored by the Highfield Schoolboys' Club and the Harewood Young People's Club respectively. Results (South Canterbury names first) were:— Singles.—M. 'Walker beat D. R. Hope, 2 up; M. Strange beat R. S. Peate, 3 and 2; A. Park halved with R. D. Duke; J Lister lost to I. J. McNish, 2 and 1; C. Moore beat C. V. Stokes, 3 and 2; I. Beswarwick lost to P. A. Jordan, 2 and 1: R. Ellis beat S. Marriott, 3 and 2; G. White beat B. Taylor, 5 and 3; R. Ledlngham halved with P. Armour; R. Baillie beat M Hignett, 5 and 4; A. H. Panton lost to R. Patterson. 1 down; M. Ussher beat M. Fuller, 4 and 3.

Foursomes.—Park and Lister halved with Hope and Peate: Walker and Moore halved with Duke and McNish; Strange and Beswarlck beat Stokesand Jordan. 4 and 3; Ellis and Ledlngham beat Marriott and Taylor. 1 up; White and Baillie beat Armour and Hignett, 5 and 4; Panton and Ussher beat Patterson and Fuller, 2 and 1.

CHRISTCHURCH LADIES’ CLUB.—Bogey match Silver division: Mrs A. I. Charles (11). 2 up; Miss D. Irvine (14), 2 down; Mrs E. G. Mitchell (13), 3 down. Bronze division: Mrs R. W. Hope (18), 3 down: Mrs V. G. Spiller (25), Mrs M. G. Louisson (24). Mrs A. H. Jecks (17). Mrs V. W. Brownlee (27), all 4 down.

WINDSOR LADIES’ CLUB.— Stableford—Bronze: Mrs M. Harris, 30 points; Mrs D. Gribbin. 24; Mrs I. Jordan. 22. C grade: Mrs H. Sheppard. 20 points, on a count-back from Mrs F. Saunders: Mrs J. Kirby, 18.
