Charge Account Sales Rise

Charge account sales rose by 283 per cent, in the last three months of last year compared with the same period of the year before, according to a restricted survey of consumer credit released by the Department of Statistics.

This was the biggest rise in consumer credit transactions for the quarter avalnst the same quarter oi 1959.

Cash sales rose by 18.18 per cent, and hire purchase sales by 9.6 per cent Instalment and lay-bv trading showed a drop of 16.9 per cent. It was tije only type of trading covered by the survey to show a drop. Over the year charge account sales rose 28.3 per cent., compared with 1959. hire purchase sales by 22.6 per cent, and cash sales by 20.9 per cent.

Lay-by or instalment trading fell 12.4 per cent, and cash order trading by 6.7 per cent
