Extension To Import Year Shocks Trade

This week’s news of the extension of the import licensing year to June 30 next year has come as a shock to many importers. Importers who did not get goods shipped quickly enough missed the benefits of the R licensing when the scheme was cancelled.
Among goods that were shipped immediately were South African foodstuffs. Many importers got the whole of their 1961 contracts shipped because of the likelihood of changes of duty on South African goods.
This means there will be an influx of some goods that will have to be spread until after March next year. Then, if the Government does not allow further licences, serious shortages can be expected. Recent changes on the world market have pushed the price of sugar up by about £3 a ton and because of this the New Zealand Sugar Company has increased its price to distributors by £2 a ton.
This lifts the retail price in Christchurch by Jd on 21b packs. Id on 41b and 61b packs and Is 2d on 701 b bags. Confectionery, jellies and other products with a high sugar content are likely to be dearer.
Breakfast Food—A new style of pack is being used for VIMsx. a breakfast food made in Christchurch by D. H. Brown and San. for it* 41b bags. This type of bag. already used by other manufacturers, lends Itself to eye-appealing displays. The new pack Is 2Jd dearer at 5s Bd.
Lemon Cord.—A new brand of lemon curd will shortly be released on the Christchurch market. Selling at Is lOd for a 4oz jar it will be marketed under the name “Jonella."
New Cigarette.—W. D. and H. O. Wills has Introduced a king-size filter tip cigarette on to the local market. In packs of 20, the new cigarette will sell under the brand name of “Life.” An American blend tobacco is used in the new cigarette.
Bacon and Ham.—Bacon curers have announced new higher prices. Bacon will retail 3d dearer at As Md a lb. while cooked ham wtl) be 8s 7d a lb. up Id.
Tea Dearer. Packers of Amber Tips Tea have increased the price of their tea by Id a Jib. Half-pound packs will now sell at 3s 6d.
Frozen Peas.—Frozen peas are now 2d a pack cheaper. Standard packs now sell at 2s 4d. family packs at 3s 4d, and the 30oz pack at 5s 6d. Business Persona] Mr R. R. Maddren has been elected chairman of the Auck. land Marine Underwriters' Association for the coming year. Mr Maddren is manager of the Auckland branch of the British Traders Insurance Company, Ltd.
Mr H. D. T. Williamson, who is retiring as general manager of the A.N.Z. Bank. Ltd., on July 1, has accepted an appointment to the head board of the Union Trustee Company of Australia, Ltd. Mr F. R. Shelton has been appointed company secretary for B.P. INZ.), Ltd. Before being appointed secretary he was cost accountant with the organisation for 12 years.
