(N.Z Press Assn.—copyright)

LONDON, May 10. The British research ship Shackleton was damaged when it touched bottom while sailing in an uncharted area in the Antarctic, the ship’s master. New Zealand-born Captain B. Sull, said today. The hull and steering were damaged, and the ship had to stop at Cape Town for repairs. The ship, carrying 11 scientists and technicians, docked at Southampton after a 34.000-mile voyage in the Antarctic.

The scientists returned with test tubes containing a mystery virus which killed many husky dogs at Antarctic bases. They will attempt to Identify the virus and find a cure for it. The party was met by Dr Vivian Fuchs, Director of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, who said he might fly to the Antarctic late this year.
