HAZARD IN CONCERT WORLD OF PARIS
(Neu Zeatana Press Association)
AUCKLAND. May 11
The concert world in Paris offers wonderful artists. It also has its hazards, according to Noel Mangim the 28-year-old bass from Blenheim, when he returned by air from Pans today to sing in the Auckland Festival opera "Don Pasquale.”
"One night at the theatre recently there was a terrific explosion,” he said. "Evervone else ignored it but ” I rushed outside to see what was happening. Some Algerian rebels had exploded a piaster bomb just near the foyer.”
During the recent Algerian crisis there had been no outward alarm in the city but most foreign residents were warned to have their bags packed ready to leave the city, said Mr Mangin. There was a general tense atmosphere but the measures
taken by President de Gaulle were most effective.
Mr Mangin, who is studying under the French teacher Domenique Modesti. has received two offers from the Sadlers Wells Opera to join the company. He was approached in Australia last year when he was singing with the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Opera and again recently. Mr Mangin flew from Paris on an inaugural DCB round-the-world jet flight of the French airline, T.A.I. He will return there again m August, after the "Don Pasquale” season and a short h s >lida y, to continue his studies.
