“OPEN WAR” IN HUTT
Larrikin-Led Teen-Agers (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 11. A state of “open war” between larrikin-led teen-agers and the custodian of the local community hall exists at Naenae in the Hutt Valley. After representations to the police by the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr P. Dowse) extra police supervision is being given in the area. The custodian of the hall, Mr A. Upjohn, said today that recent events included a “no-holds-barred” scuffle with a teen-age girl, a subsequent “siege” by her colleagues, a fist-fight with one of the "ringleaders,” and threats of violence to himself, his wife, and family.
“The hard 'core of these teen-agers’ is now about 27 to 30 strong,” Mr Upjohn said. “It’s still growing. Open war has been declared, and sooner or later it’s going to come to a showdown.”
