CHURCH BUDGET SYSTEM
Presbytery Gives Approval
In spite of considerable criticism, the new self-alloca-tion budget system within Presbyterian parishes, outlined by the General Assembly of the Presbytery of New Zealand, was approved by motion at a meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery on Tuesday evening. Speaking against the motion brought forward by the convener of the finance committee (Mr H. Clark), the Rev. H. S. Manson said it was far too precipitate and that it was necessary for the church to gradually gear itself to accepting the idea, which at present was too idealistic. Other speakers said they had “considerable misgivings." The Rev. L. N. Rogers, convener of the student committee, gave the committee's report on the acceptance and training of lay preachers. He said there were undoubtedly good grounds for the formality of having authorised men to preach the Gospel. This scheme generally did not apply to the older laymen who had conscientiously and successfully performed their tasks . for many years.
