6-2 Win For Wellington

'The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, May 10.

Fast Wellington forwards, skilfully led by JI. E. Reid, broke through the South Island defence repeatedly for a 6-2 win in the floodlight soccer trial at the Basin Reserve tonight. Complete lack of combination cost the South Island four goals in the first spell, and it was only when it mastered Wellington's weak mid-field defence that it scored twice in the second spell. Reid, a former international inside-right, played his best game in New Zealand. At centre-forward, he scored twice, and made three of the other four goals He outplayed the South Island half, B. Morris, and moving from wing to wing he caught the backs. D. Simmonds. of Canterbury, and P. Frost, napping nearly every time Only the resolute goalkeeping of J. Callaghan, of Canterbury—he was left unsupported during some formidable attacks—and the continual hard work and skill of P. McFarlane, of Ota so. prevented a bigger score.

Reid was backed by fine wing-half play bv S. Foye and D. Wallace, the latter In his first representative game. Foye completely overshadowed th« Nelson insideright. R Stewart, and Wallace had the better of the Ofaeo international. D McVev. But Stewart did break away once to assist the veteran Southland winger. C Steele, in an attractive scissors movement which ended with Steele gathering the ball and scoring after it had been defected by a Wellington defender.

McFarlane made possible the South Island’s first goal when, in a typical display of precise ball control, he found a gao to pass to the centreforward. E. Charlton. of '"an’erbury. who drew the Wellington soal-keener. P. L Whiting, and scored. Simmonds started solidly and kent a steady watch on the quick Wellington forwards, but he lapsed twice in the last 10 minutes. In the first he deflected the ball into his own net. and in the second he allowed Reid to heat him badly, and T. G McCabe scored.
