(Neu) Zealand Press Association)
HAMILTON, May 10.
The New Zealand basketball conference, at present being held in Hamilton, has rejected a remit from Canterbury that white sockettes be worn at New Zealand tournaments instead of long black stockings. In supporting the remit. Miss H. Yates, of Canterbury, said that the black stockings looked old-fashioned, and she asked delegates to think of the girls who had to wear them.
Miss G, M. Symes, the manager of the last New Zealand team to Australia, said that when the girls first arrived the Australians giggled at their long black stockings, but by the end of the tour the Australians were impressed by their neatness and were full of admiration for them. International Tourney
New Zealand would send a basketball team to the international tournament to be held in England in 1963. the conference decided.
The New Zealand president. Mrs R. Lane, said'that the ’ournament would probably be in August of 1963. In conjunction with the tournament, an international conference would also be held. The conference decided against a Canterbury remit that Australia be invited to send a team to New Zealand in 1962.
Mrs Lane was elected an honorary vice-president of the International Basketball Federation.
The conference approved an Auckland remit to stage a
full New Zealand tournament in Auckland next year. Auckland delegates reported that as Auckland had not staged a full tournament for 10 years, "it was about time they did." Nearly all accommodation had been found, and transport and facilities provided no difficulties. The conference also decided that the 1962 council meeting be held at Masterton. Increased Levy
It was decided that the present levy of 6d a player would be increased to Is a player in 1962, and the money placed in a common fund to finance New Zealand teams and officials travelling with teams, and for delegates to international conferences.
