GEOLOGY AWARD

Professor’s Paper

DUNEDIN, May 10. The McKay Hamner, the annual award for the most significant contribution to geology in New Zealand, was awarded to Professor D. S. Coombs, head of the department of geology at the University of Otago, by the Geological Society at its conference in Te Anau. The award commemorates Mr Alexander McKay. New Zealand’s pioneer field geologist, and was presented to Professor Coombs for his paper to the International Geological Conference, held in Copenhagen last year, on "Lower Grade Mineral Facies."

The Geological Society approved rules changes to enable it to become a member of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Officers elected were:— President. Dr. R P. Suggate (Christchurch!; vice-presi-dent. Mr J. Healy (Rotorua): secretary. Mr D. R. Gregg (Christchurch): treasurer. Mr T. L. Grant-Taylor (Wellington); committoe. Dr. J. B. Waterhouse (Wellington). Messrs H. Gair (Christchurch). J. Grant-Mackie (Auckland), W. Heinz (Christchurch), B. I* Wood (Dunedin).
