ADDINGTON MARKET Quality Calves Meet Less Buoyant Sale
Better quality store calves met a less buoyant sale at Addington Market yesterday but values held fully firm to a shade better for the smaller sorts. Top quality heifer calves suitable for breeding were fully 30s a head cheaper but there was a solid demand from fatteners in the £l7 to £2O price range. Breeding cows were cheaper by £2 to £3 a head, and in cases more, and other classes of store cattle met a weaker sale.
Store sheep sold at about parity with last week’s easier rates but the best of the lambs tended to improve by a shilling or two. Chatham Island vendors were well to the fore in top sales of good Romney sheep. STORE SHEEP
Store sheep and lambs numbers dropped to 5978 head, compared with the 8506 yarded last week, but there was a sizeable gallery following the sale, which made for good competition and a satisfactory clearance. The offering included 2099 store lambs (5466
last week*. 725 two.-tooth ewes <—), 2621 older ewes (1602), and 533 wethers (1440).
Lamb quality was again a varied assortment with a few top quality pens included. Most of the entry was of end-of-season clearance lots. For anything with some size and condition the market looked to be a shilling or two better than last week, but other classes of lambs held to about last week’s prices. The ewe lamb offering had a few more quality pens this week which sold soundly, but most of the section made little more than wether lamb values. Best fine-wool wether lambs sold from 41e 6d to 43s 6d, with exceptional sales up to 53s 6d. average to good made 32s to 39s 6d, and others sold up to 30s. The pick of the Romney and Romney cross ranged between 40 s and 41s 6d, with good at 36s to 395. average at 30s to 335, and others up to 27s 6d. Down cross lambs made from 42s to 44s 6d for the best, with average to good at 33s to 39s 6d. Average to good shorn wether lambs changed hands at 32s to 38s.
Top Romney ewe lamb sales were between 51s and 575, and the best fine-wools made from 50s to 51s. Average to good ewe lambs made 39s to 465, and others sold at 26s to 30s.

STORE CATTLE Store cattle numbers showed a marked decrease on last week's big entry. The offering totalled 1141 head, compared with 1972 last Wednesday, and included 702 calves and 439 older cattle. A large gallery followed the sale. When the calf market opened there was not much life to the bidding and sales were barely up to late rates and this trend continued for some time. At the end buyers appeared to raise their limits slightly and bid more freely. Taken overall the main lots of better steer calves appeared to be up to 30s a head weaker than last week but smaller calves and mixed lines looked to be, if anything, slightly dearer.
The calf selling season is now tapering off and the * quality of the offering yesterday was not as good as last week. With the exception of several pens of well grown calves of even breeding the entry was fairly mixed with a lot of small calves included.
The feature of the sale was a consignment of 56 Hereford heifer calves which were flown from Palmerston North. The tops of these were of very good quality, and showing good breeding and well marked. Competition was keen for these from breeders and they sold at satisfactory rates although for less than they would probably have made three weeks ago. The top pen of 20 made £2B 18s 6d.
For heifer calves generally the demand for breeding has slackened off and the better class of coloured cattle were not as buoyant but there was still a very firm market at slightly dearer rates from fatteners for the small to medium types. An unnamed vendor topped the steer calf sales with a pen of Aberdeen Angus cross at £27 18s 6d. The estate H. Snushall (Conway Hills) sold 18 Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross at £25 18s 6d and the same price was paid for the top pen of Herefords from the Birchdale Estate (Hawarden).
The Oroua Grazing Company (Palmerston North) topped the heifer calf sales with their line of 56 Herefords at £26 3s 6d to £2B 18s 6d, and there were 20 at the top figure. The estate H. Snushall sold a pen of Herefords at £23 18s 6d. T. B. Morten (Hilltop) received £22 8s 6d for 14 Herefords. i The best Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen • Angus Cross steer calves made from £24 18s 6d to £27 18s 6d, witn the best of the Herefords at up to £25 18s 6d. ADULT CATTLE In the adult cattle market the breeding cows showed a definite easing of between £2 and a head and other classes of store cattle looked to be back up by 30s a head. Generally, the market for grown cattle lost any gain it might have made last week. j The entry totalled 439 head, compared with 698 last week. Quality was mixed with, several pens of useful steers and some good lines of breeding cows. There was a good demand for two and a-hali-year steers, and the best of these ranged from £4O 18s 8d to £42 13s 6d. with average to good at £36 18s 6d to £39 18s 6d.
