AUCKLAND THEFTS
Gang Work Suspected (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 10. Detectives of the Auckland Criminal Investigation Branch believe a well-organ-ised gang of thieves is responsible for a series of clothing thefts from dry cleaning shops and men’s outfitters in the city. They think the gang may be selling the Clothing in industrial camps and Maori centres in the far north and the middle of the island. A senior detective said today that more than £2OOO worth of clothing had been stolen in recent weeks. About £BOO worth has been recovered—a large quantity from the tidal mangrove swamps west of the north-western motorway. Detectives have made arrests in connexion with a series of shop burglaries at Te Atatu last week. Members of the car conversion squad at the police station have also made a number of arrests after a minor wave of car conversion at week-ends. One young offender has admitted taking 35 vehicles.
