New Office "Will Enhance Beauty Of Square’

The nine-storeyed building planned for the Government Life Insurance Office would do nothing to detract from the Square or from the Cathedral, Mr K. E. Chisholm. property officer for the organisation’s head office, said yesterday. He was speaking at a function given by the Government Life Insurance Office to show appreciation for the help given by Christchurch local bodies in planning the new building.

“If anything, the new building will enhance the beauty of Cathedral square.” Mr Chisholm said.

“This project will probably be the biggest commercial office in the South Island. “Planning and. design created many problems new to the city.” The City Council, Christchurch Drainage Board, and the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board had all helped and co-operated, he said.

“Without this assistance and co-operation it would not have been possible to produce such an attractive design.” Mr Chisholm said the first Christchurch branch of the Government Life Office was opened in 1883. Since then it had given continuous service as part of a State-wide organisation.
