DISASTER IN JAVA
Volcanoes Erupt
(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA. May 10 Five more volcanoes in Java have burst into activity, according to reports in Djakarta. The volcanoes are 12.000 ft Mount Raung in central Java, and Mount Kelud. Mount Semeru, Mount Lemongan and Mount Idjen all in west Java Thirty thousand persons have been evacuated from around the flaming Mount Merapi, which on Monday claimed its first victim's—one man was killed by a rain of lava and stones and five were nearly asphyxiated by a searing cloud of gas. All were members of the village guard corps. Earth tremors continue to shake cities in central Java which are now in perpetual twilight from clouds of ash thrown out by Mount Merapi and Mount Raung. Mount Merapi, which has been active for more than a month, is rocking under regular subterranean detonations and lava is spilling from its crater lip and newlyopened fissures in its sides. The molten rock has already destroyed one village and threatens a second.
