The Australian soprano. Joan Sutherland, sang today in Milan’s huge La Scala opera house to an audience of two —the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Afterwards Miss Sutherland hurried from the stage and spoke to the Royal couple. The Queen's and the Duke's applause echoed round the empty onera house as the curtain fell after a special performance of a 12-mlnute ex’ract from Donizetti’s •'Lucia di Lammermoor.” The Queen and the Duke visited Milan on their wav to Turin, where they ended their 10-day visit to Italy.
All roads «n Milan's city centre were closed for the Royal vis t. and the Queen and the Duke were wildly cheered by a mass of Milanese in the great •qua’-e outside La Scala. After the rehearsal the Queen stepped on tn the outside baloony of La Scala to acknowledge the applause of the crowd.
