Capping Week

Sir, —Is not a good deal of this protestation a little out of perspective? Some of us who graduated at one of the three venerable English universities —Cambridge. Oxford and, of course. Balliol—can remember youthful irresponsibility taking just as extravagant forms, if not far worse; “bump suppers” and bonfires in the college courts, for instance. Nevertheless, if one overstepped the mark retribution was liable to be swift and calamitous, because not only were the masters, deans and tutors of the various colleges acutely sensible of the good reputation of their own particular foundation but the conduct of every undergraduate was a matter of constant personal concern to some individual tutor. With the doors of education now wide open, the newer universities cannot be expected to exercise so intimate a control, and it is enormously to their credit that they manage things as well as they do. —Yours, etc., M.T. May 10. 1961.
