ESTONIAN MIGRANT

New Russian Demand

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, May 9. The Australian Government would refuse to extradite an Estonian immigrant, Erwin Viks, in spite of a new Russian demand, the Sydney “Sun’s’’ Canberra correspondent reported today.

The correspondent said the Australian Embassy in Moscow had received a copy of a new note from the Soviet Government demanding extradition of Viks for alleged war crimes.

On March 23, the Attor-ney-General (Sir Garfield Barwick) said the Federal Government had no legal authority to interfere with the liberty of Viks. He said that no extradition treaty existed between Russia and Australia, and Australia had no power to arrest, detain, or surrender any person in Australia except in accordance with the rule of law.
