1947 TEXAS EXPLOSION

France Held Not Liable

(N.Z. Pres! Assn,—Copyright) HOUSTON (Texas), May 9. A Federal Appeals Court at Houston yesterday ruled that France was not liable for damages connected with the 1947 Texas City explosion in which about 570 people were killed. The United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals thus reversed a decision by a lower Federal Court and directed that Court to declare than France was not liable and would not have to pay any claims arising out of the disaster. The French vessel Grandcamp exploded at a dock in Texas City, Texas, on April 16. 1947, as it was being loaded with ammonium nitrate fertiliser. In the 48-hour holocaust that resulted, two other ships exploded and fires and blasts on shore virtually levelled the city. In addition to the 570 or more persons killed, nearly 3500 were injured.
