Grandmother A Vicar
(N Z.P.A.-Reuter)' OSLO.
A licence has been granted to Norway’s first woman vicar and she will shortly be ordained. She is 59-year-old Ingrid Bjerkas, three times a grandmother, who took up her theological studies when she was 50. Mrs Bjerkas will be ordained by Bishop Kristian Schjelderup. who has declared that he has no objection to women vicars. On the contrary, it is his conviction . that not only have they a natural place and right within the Church but also that they may bring it new vitality. Six of Norway’s nine bishops have, however, issued a statement in which they warn against women vicars, and it is believed that the majority of the clergy are opposed.
