American Way Of Life
Sir, —The comments of President Kennedy concerning the news build-up about the manned space shot and the consequent loss to United States prestige had the shot failed, is illustrative of the fact that, with capitalist commercialism, news is a commodity bought and sold, a commodity very capable of being emphasised, coloured, manipulated at the source or along the line of dispersal, to suit varying interests, even to suppression occasionally. However, President Kennedy had little need to worry had the shot failed; journalists of his country are resourceful, and plausible explanations and. plausible explanations would have appeared even perhaps that of "Communist infiltration.” The boil-up of free world competitive journalism produces its own type of scum and froth, and news from the United States needs watching with critical discernment.— Yours, etc., STUDENT OF AFFAIRS. May 8, 1961.
