Cricket YORKSHIRE MATCH

O’Neill May Score Century

(N.Z. Prrst Asm.—Copyright) BRADFORD. May 9. The Australian batsman. N. O’Neill, has a chance today to score the first century of the 1961 tour of England. O'Neill will resume his innings this morning at 60 not out. If he can continue where he left off yesterday a three figure score looks certain. O’Neill gave a polished exhibition yesterday, especially in cover driving, and his score included six fours and a six. He was especially Isevere on the spinners of B. Close and two shots off him through the covers were particularly good. O’Neill put on 70 for the third wicket with B. Simpson and then an unfinished 47 for the fourth wicket with P. Burge. These two partnerships, backed by a sound opening stand of 66 between Simpson and W. Lawry enabled the Australians to reach three for 190 after the day’s play was stopped four times by rain. The match is due to finish this evening so a result is impossible, but the touring team badly needs batting and bowling practice and it will make the most of this last day. It is probable that N. Harvey will close the innings about lunch time to give his bowlers a chance to make up for the play they have lost in the last week. The rain, which has hit this tour on every day but one so far, was responsible for the losing of 104 min--utes yesterday but at least the batsmen can get a chance to have a hit. Their performance generally in most adverse weather was creditable, particularly as the bowling was always tight. The day’s scores were:— AUSTRALIA First Innings R. Simpson c Wilson, b Platt 72 W. Lawry, b Platt .. .. 29 R. Harvey, c Wilson, b Illingworth .. 2 N. O’Neill, not out .. SO P. Burge, not out .. ..22 Extras •• 5 Total for three wickets ISO Fall of wickets: one for 66, two for 73, three for 143.
