Bowls AFFAIRS OF CENTRE

Recent Tour In Australia

Messrs J. R. Smith, J. T. Bisman and M. A. le Cren were re-elected councillors to the New Zealand Bowling Centre when the Christchurch Bowling Centre held its monthly meeting on Monday. Mr Smith, captain-manager of the New Zealand bowling party which recently returned from a tour of several Australian States, said the tour had been an unparalleled success with a great team spirit prevailing. The Australians had won 15 of the 26 games played. Mr E. Williamson, a member of the team, said the organisation of the Australian associations had left nothing to be desired. Mr W. R. Featherston, president-elect of the New Zealand association, said the next national tournament would be held in Christchurch. Sports Telecasts Reporting from the minutes of the association he said: “The Director of the Broadcasting Service advised that its first mobile outside telecast unit would be operating by July, 1961, but only in the Auckland area at first. The Broadcasting Service would appreciate discussions on the possibility of obtaining telecasts either direct or filmed, and using items for sports programmes. “The association resolved that the national secretary inform the Broadcasting Service of the constitution of the association and the method by which champion tournaments were conducted. It was further resolved to invite representatives of the Broadcasting Service to meet the executive at its meeting ■n Christchurch in June, and in the meantime to ask the service to consult with the Auckland Bowling Centre about arrangements for the coming season.’’ Mr Featherston said it might be possible to have the finals of the next Dominion tournament in Christchurch telecast, but that would depend on whether ? unit had arrived in the Sooth Island. The Australian Bowling Council had accepted an invitation from the New Zealand association to send a team to tour New Zealand during February and March of 1963, said Mr Featherston.
