PUKAKI BUMPED

Arrival Back At Base

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 9. H.M.N.Z.S. Pukaki's mission to the phosphate islands ended in a spectacular fashion at Auckland yesterday with a bump a scrape, a lot of lost paint, and a few small dents. Coming alongside at the Jjevonport naval base she swung into the stern of the £4,000.000 frigate Otago and then came round with her bows and smacked the piles. It was an untimely end to what was described by the Chief of Naval Staff, RearAdmiral P. Phipps, as a “mission well carried out.” The Pukaki’s captain, Commander P. L. Bardwell said: There wasn’t much room to get in.” Admiral Phipps later addressed the ship’s company and congratulated ihem on a successful cruise.
