ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Cattle Ease Sharply; Heavy Entries
A sharp easing in fat cattle prices was recorded at Addington Market yesterday. With an entry of 555 head the market was unable to absorb all the cattle offered, and most classes were from £3 to £4 cheaper on last week’s already weaker rates. Fat lamb numbers were also much bigger, but freezing interests absorbed the increased entry of light to medium lambs, and the best of these made a fractional gain. Shorn lambs again sold well. Fat sheep numbers also increased markedly, but good sheep made late rates, with prime medium-weight butchers’ ewes and lighter young wethers a shade dearer. Older wethers met a limited inquiry.
FAT LAMBS The fat lamb entry Increased sharply to 3414 head, compared with 2733 last week. Most of the offering was again of mainly good quality medium-weight lambs and big heavy sorts were still scarce. In spite of the big entry there was a generally sound sale and most values tended to be about Is above last week. There was good support from freezing interests for the light to mediumweight sorts but there was little inquiry from graziers. Towards the end of the sale there was a slight weakening which was mainly confined to plainer sorts. Among the top sales reported R. G. Gilbert and Son (Ellesmere) sold two at 68s Id and sales at 64s Id were made by H. W. McLeod (Te Kinga), R. G. Copland (Rakaia), Bennett Bros. (Riverside), estate W. The bigger entry made buying more selective, but competition was still sound for quality, and there was little change in prices for good sheep. Good quality young wethers maintained late rates, and the prime light to medium-weight class looked to be a shade dearer, and there was more competition in the 65s to 70s price range. Older wethers and plain and unfinished sorts, however, met a limited demand and were not easy to sell. Medium cutting Jines of butchers’ ewes sold well, and, if anything, made a fractional gain. A bigger number of sales were made in the 35s to 39s price range for this class. Other classes held firm on late rates. Top sales of wethers at 81s Id were made by R. Haskett (Mt. Hutt), with seven, and Mrs N. B. Stanbury (Little River) with a similar number. G. B. Henderson (Lyndhurst) sold 12 at 80s Id. and sales at 79s Id were made by the estate J. O'Connell (Rakaia) and E. 3. Francis (Halswell). In the ewe section, the top price of 42s Id was secured by Wedgewood Farm (Woodend), and sales at 40s Id were made by S. F. Searle (Annat) and J F. Brown (Greenpark). Values were:— Extra prime two - tooth wethers, 76s Id to 81s id. Prime heavy young wethers, 73s Id to 76s Id. Prime medium young wethers, 66s Id to 72s Id. The offering totalled 553> head, compared wltl) 369 last week. Some excellent cattle were forward, but there was a large proportion of plain and unfinished types. Good medium-weight butchers’ steers eased fully £3 a head and heavy steers were cheaper by £3 to £4. The light and unfinished steers slipped ■ by about £4 a head and made about store values with the bulk of this category being absorbed by grazier interests. Heifer values were generally back by about £3 in spite of a lot of good quality pens being offered. Some grazier buying also supported the market for the plainer types. Cow values opened at a lower level reflecting the drop in the schedule, but. the heavy offering caused a further decline and the general run of values was £3 to £4 back on last week. Over-fat types were hard to sell. The top price for steers was gained by S. H. Curd (Winchmore) with two big bullocks which made £56 17s 6d and £55 2s 6d. These were exceptional sales and the next highest was the estate H. T. Little (Hui Hui) with one at £53 12s 6d and J. U. McCracken (Hayland) with two at £53 2s 6d. Three from the Bayfields Estate (Rakaia Gorge) made £52 17s 6d and C. 3. McLaughlin (Methven) had a sale at £5l 17s 6d. As an indication of the depressed market the estate R L. Jameson (Rotherham) sold 16 at £47 17s 6d to £5l 7s 6d wl.ich averaged just under £5O, compared with 16 of comparable quality which averaged £53 2s 6d last'week. BULLS AND BONER CATTLE .About 20 bulls were offered, and these were mostly of light to medium-weight. The market opened on a much weaker note, reflecting the drop of 10s per 1001 b in the schedule, and competition was not as keen. The heavier bulls sold from £42 17s 6d to £49 17s fid, with medium from about £34 17s 6d to £4O 12s fid. and light and small from £lO 17s fid upwards. The entry of boner cows and heifers showed a similar weakening, and throughout both sections the drop appeared to be possibly more than the schedule decrease, reflecting a degree of uncertainty as to future levels. DAIRY CATTLE The dairy cattle offering totalled about 26 head of about equal numbers of heifers and cows. Friesian breeding predominated In all classes. Quality was about average, with a few exceptions. Heifers sold about on a par with last week’s steady prices. Best Friesian heifers made £5O to £5B. with average quality at £4l to £49. For cows the market was not as buoyant as last week because of less competition, and most values eould be quoted back by 40s to 50s. Best second, third and fourth calvers sold from £52 to £5B. average made £43 to £49. and others sold from £3l to £39. VEALERS About 150 head were offered in the veal pens, compared with about the same number last week. Quality was fair, although there were some very good pens included. There was a scarcity of small calves, but a good number of quality runners was offered, together with a fair number of good suckers. Values generally were easier by 20s to 25s on the better class of cattle and by up to 30s on plainer sorts. Best large runners sold from about £3l 7s 6d to £34 12s fid. medium made £2B 2s M to £3O 7s 6d. small £24 15s to £27 17s 6d; larve suckers made £2l 2s fid to £24 17s 6d. medium suckers £l7 17s fid to £l9 17s fid. small suckers £l4 7s fid to £l6 7s Sd; best calves realised £l5 2s 6d to £l7 18s 6d. medium calves £ll 7s fid to £l4 2s fid. small calves to £lO 7s 6d. and bobby and inferior from about 80s upwards. FAT PIGS There were even more porkers yarded yesterday than last week’s heavy entry, and a large proportion of West Coast pigs was included. The seasonal quitting of unfinished pigs was noticeable in the offering and seemed to have a depressing effect on values. Only the very best medium-weight pigs commanded late rates and others were cheaper bv a further 5s to fis a head. The chopper entry was about the same size but included a number of over-weight baconers Values fully maintained the better rates of last week. A smaller en’rv of baconers was offered and nuality was the poorest for the season. Here again competition was not so keen and values slipped by a further 5s to 10s a head. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers. £5 fls fid to £7 12s Sd. Medium porkers, £8 9s 6d to £9 4s 6d. Heavy porkers. £9 9s 6d to ,£9 19s fid. Light baconers. £lO 9s 6d to £ll 14s fid. Medium baconers. £l2 4s fid to £l3 4s fid. Heavy baconers, £l3 2s 6d to £l3 l&s fid. Choppers. £lO Ils to £l6 3s fid. STORE PIGS Fewer store pigs came forward. and the entry was largely made up of medium and large stores—a typical end of season assortment. The attendance of buyers was a little larger, and last week’s easing was fully recovered. Values were:— Small weaners. 42s to 50s. Best weaners, 52s to 565. Slips 60s to 70s. Small! and medium stores. 75s to 955. Large stores. £5 to £6
