Swimming ROOF FOR POOL GALLERY

Baths Committee Refuses Support

A letter from the Christchurch City Council'* baths committee refusing support for the building of a roof over the spectators’ gallery at the Centennial Pool, was received at a meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association last evening. The letter also refused the centre a free night for a carnival at the pool. "So we’ve just banged our heads against a wall again.” said the chairman (Mr M. R- Duckmanton) in referring to the council's decision about the roof. Mr J. H. Johnson said the council should be advised that other centres were undertaking the same task. He said Wellington was building a pool with a complete roof at less cost than was proposed in Christchurch. He quoted £162.000 against £138,000 for the project in Wellington. After a short discussion, it was decided that a letter should be written to the council conveying the centre’s disapproval at the decision and asking the council to investigate new roofing techniques which might lower the cost. Direct Delegates Disapproval of the late arrival and early departure of direct delegates from the annual conferences of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was expressed by Mrs L. Piper. Direct delegates had been leaving the annual meeting at an early hour in the afternoon with the excuse that they had to catch a plane and had missed several hour* of the meeting a* a result, she said. “It costs us a lot of money for these people to come to our meetings and I think we have a say in it,” she said. "They should stay until the end of the meeting. This has been going on for years.” Mrs Piper said that planes were still leaving at 9 p.m. The Canterbury centre will write to the council of the New Zealand Swimming Association advising that dire.-t delegates have been leaving the conference early and requesting that they be asked to remain until the end in future. Television After a request from Mr J. H. Johnson it was decided to write to the Auckland association asking about the coverage ft received in sports sessions on television. "I think w should prepare ourselves,” Mr Johnson said.
