Tests Near Waitara

(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. May 9. The third oil drilling search site in Taranaki may be in North Taranaki. It will depend on tests being carried out in the Mangahewa No. I hole drilled at Tikorangi. near Waitara. These velocity tests, which will begin in about a week, are expected to provide information that will indicate whether or not it will be worth while sinking another hole in the same area Another site for drilling in Taranaki has been chosen near the first bore at Kapuni but oil officials made no secret today of the fact that they would prefer to drill in North Taranaki They said that they can make no de"ision until the tests are completed. Apart from having to transport all . the heavy drilling equipment 40 miles from. Tikorangi to Kapuni, new staff would have to be employed. the drilling superintendent (Mr P. J. Johansen) explained. Some men were ’iving at Waitara and New Plymouth. Since drilling stopped three weeks ago. the hole has been prepared for testing. Seveninch casing has been placed in the well to a depth of 12.960 ft.
