CONGESTION AT WHARVES
Importers Blamed
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 9. “Innumerable instances of ships being unable to work to full capacity because importers are using wharf premises as warehouses is a contributing factor in the creation of the present congestion on the waterfront,” said the assistant general manager of the Wellington Harbour Board (Mr R. R. Reeves) today. He said a Japanese cargo vessel, the Kowa Maru, with 700 tons of cargo to discharge, was only able to work with two gangs because a sixth of the floor space was taken up with an 18ft pile of galvanised wire and iron discharged from the Koranui more than two weeks ago. Another example of laxity in lifting cargo came from the Railways Department which had let 600 tons of railway lines sit in the open space between two stores for more than a month, he said.
