FLOODS IN U.S.
At Least 30 Die (bl Z.P A -Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, May 8. At least 3# persons have died as a result of widespread flooding after a violent tornado in several American states, according to United Press International. Helicopters joined boats and land parties in the rescue of hundreds left homeless. Continuous week-end rains brought sweeping floods to Illinois and Kentucky. Oklahoma counted 15 dead in tornadoes which hit the towns of Howe and Reichert. There were 10 dead in Arkansas, four in Missouri and one in Illinois. The American Red Cross in St. Louis, Missouri, estimated that at least one thousand families were affected. Damage was estimated in millions of dollars. Threat Continues The threat of more tornadoes, accompanied by severe thunderstorms and damaging hail, hung over parts of Oklahoma. Kansas. Arkansas. Missouri. Illinois, Indiana. and Kentucky late today. Floodwaters surging from Kentucky's North Licking river forced all the residents of the little town of Milford to flee. Industries and schools were closed in southern Illinois as more rain poured down.
