DUNEDIN, May 9. A sound trial by Promise and McGregor, and attractive gallops by Gay Fox, Corvale, and Chattel were features of the work at Wingatui this morning. Conditions were ideal after a frost. The course proper offered good footing. The trestles were 30 feet out. Promise (H. T. Anderton) and McGregor <B. J. Anderton) were together over seven furlongs in Imin 36sec, running on solidly over the last three furlongs in 42sec. A last-start winner over hurdles at Riccarton at Easter, Promise will revert to flat racing in the Awarua Handicap at Invercargill He was second to Melodic in this race last year. An impressive winner of his last two races in hack company. McGregor will test the open-class milers in the President’s Handicap. There was little between Cashmere (H. T. Anderton), Sarobin (B. J. Anderton), and Ravelston (R. J. Skelton) at the end of five furlongs in Imin 6 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40 4-ssee. Cashmere is also to resume racing on the flat, and will be ridden by H. T. Anderton in the President’s Handicap. He won the hurdle race on the middle day of the Canterbury Easter meeting. Yearly (H. J. Powell) impresied in running out five furlongs in Imin 7sec after taking 27sec for the first two furlongs. Dual Acceptors Like Strategy, Relation, and Aroair, she is engaged at both Invercargill and ’ Ashburton. No decision has yet been made with these dual acceptors. Linton (R J. Skelton) and Kumai (B. J. Anderton) went over the same ground in Imin 7 3-ssec, the opening two furlongs in 26 3-ssec. Gay Fox (E. J. Didham) and Corvale (F. E. Henneberry) ran three lengths clear of Mighty Smart (R. N. Marsh) at the end of half a mile in 53sec. the first furlong in 12sec. Gay Fox is a form runner in the Apprentices’ Hack Handicap at Ashburton, in which he will be ridden by Marsh. MisSrty Smart is not a par-
ticularly good track worker, and after his last-start win at the North Canterbury meeting, he is not likely to lose any admirers in the Barford Hack Handicap at Ashburton. Chattel (R. A. Low) proved too good for Depend (B. E. Kennedy) and Mighty Lucky (A. I. Powell) when she equalled this time. Chittei Chattel was runner-up in the maiden event at Beaumont at her last start and will be one of the favourites for the Trial Stakes at Invercargill. Cassius (B. J. Anderton) and Raglan (H. T. Anderton) ran the last half mile of their seven-furlong gallop in 55sec. Cassius will race in the Otatara Steeples, and Raglan will test the hurdles in the Southern Handicap. Matlock (J. R. Dowling) completed a workout over a distance by coming home over the last three furlongs in 42sec. Sir Edwin (G. Mclntosh) appeared to be shading No Offence (R. O. Cairns) and Pearly Gate (H. T. Anderton) at the end of a mile and a quarter, the last three furlongs in 44sec. Milord drew attention to his prospects in the Southern Hack Hurdles at Invercargill when he qualified as a jumper with an impressive school over a round of hurdles. He was more impressive than his companion, Mighty Robin (R. Crowe).
