Death Duties
Sir. —From this morning’s paper it appears that the Government is going to increase charges for electricity by about £1 million to the consumers. A few days ago they stated they were to increase Post Office charges, probably another £1 million. Then there is the charge for medicine they are considering, which will probably mean another £1 million charge to the public. Are all these millions they are nibbling from the public to enable the Government to give the rebate in death duties promised? Everyone in New Zealand will help to pay these increased charges, but a very privileged class of less than ten per cent, will get the benefits of decreased death duties. —Yours, etc, J G. BARCLAY. May 4, 1961.
