HANGMAN RESIGNS
Qualified As Mental Nurse
(N Z.P.A •Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, May 7.
Britain's assistant hangman. Mr Brian Allen, is resigning because he has qualified as a State-registered mental nurse. Mr Allen, whose father, Mr Harry Allen, is chief executioner, said tonight that when he qualified as a mental nurse he had to take a vow that he would do all in his power to save and preserve life.
“I came to the decision that the keeping of the vow was completely incompatible with my position as assistant executioner,” he said. Mr Allen, who has assisted his father at five executions, announced his decision after the christening of his montholo daughter, Pamela, at a Roman Catholic church in Manchester.
“I have not officially resigned yet,” he said; "but I have told my father that I am not prepared to assist him in future. I am sure he understands.”
