STRIKES IN S.A.

Preparations Under Way

(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, May 7.

Private preparations were under way throughout South Africa for three-day sit-down strikes and pretest demonstrations called by leaders of South Africa’s non-white majority for May 29, 30, and 31. Housewives in Cape Town were reported today to be hoarding everything from tinned food to candles and oil stoves.

White men and women were rushing to buy firearms. The protests are aimed against the new South African Republic, to be proclaimed on May 31 by the Government of Dr. Verwoerd. Dr. Verwoerd’s answer has been to put troops and police on a “battle footing,” and to stage nationwide police raids to smash strikes in advance.
