Signs Of Foot Infection (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) I NEW YORK. May ff.i The New Zealand pacer: False Step has signs of a foot j infection. according to a leading New York veterin-: ary surgeon. The surgeon, Mr Edward; Kennelly. told of his findings: to a New York "Mirror" j columnist, Leonard Lewin. ! He was quoted by Lewin as saying that the findings further substantiated the: decision to scratch False' Step from the International Pace at Yonkers Raceway on Thursday night. The pace i was won by Australia’s i Apmat. A last-second discovery' had shown that a nail had' been driven into the sensi-i tive area of False Stephshoof by the blacksmith. Lewin, writing in the "Mirror.” said the Yonkers I track management had spent a lot of money in bringing False Staep to America for the big race. What was more. the driver-trainer, Cecil Devine, had been emotionally insistent that his horse was all right after the nail was removed.

But, as the State veterinarian. Dr. Edward Kennelly. said last night: “I can onlyconcern myself with protecting the public. In my judgment the horse was obviously sore and I couldn’t let him race.”

The scratching “practically drove Devine and the owner. J. Smyth, to tears,” Lewin said. "The driver was so upset. he said he almost felt like going home. He begged the judges to let him first score False Step before they scratched him. He said that American drivers agreed with him that the classy pacer was not sore,” Lewin said.

But yesterday morning, according to Dr. Kennelly, the reaction set in and “the horse was so sore they had trouble getting him out of his stall.”

Dr. Kennelly was quoted by Lewin as saying that he did not think the infection was serious enough to keep False Step out of next week’s race, but “you won’t be able to tell until they give him a stiff work-out.” Marks For Oamaru (N.Z.
